Route options

Most of these treks have more than one approach — pick the one that matches your fitness and experience.

From Bari village
Moderate 6.6 km 3–4 hrs up, 2–3 hrs down

The standard route, with iron ladders bolted to rock near the summit. Also popular as a night trek timed for sunrise.

How to reach Bari village

Bari village is the base for Maharashtra's highest peak — reached by shared jeep from Kasara.

1
Reach Kasara (preferred) or Igatpuri
Kasara is on the Mumbai suburban/Central line (about 2–2.5 hrs from CSMT) and is the more commonly used access point. Igatpuri, on the Mumbai–Nashik line, also works but is further from Bari.
2
Kasara to Bari village
Shared jeeps run from Kasara station to Bari, about 1–1.5 hours on a hilly road. Jeeps leave when full and are far more frequent at weekends than on weekdays.
3
From Igatpuri instead
ST buses and shared jeeps also connect Igatpuri to Bari, roughly an hour's ride, at lower frequency than the Kasara route.
4
The climb
From Bari, the trail up Maharashtra's highest peak follows a series of installed iron ladders on the steep rock sections, roughly 3–4 hours one way. Same-day return is standard, and night treks timed for sunrise are very popular.
ℹ️No formal forest ticket, though checking in with the village is customary. Expect heavy crowding and jeep queues at weekends — this is one of the most trafficked treks in the state, and the ladder sections become bottlenecks.

Safety

Kalsubai is Maharashtra's most-visited peak trek, and its popularity is itself a factor — expect serious crowding on the iron ladder sections on weekends.

⚡Iron ladder sections get crowded and slippery on weekendsThe summit approach uses several iron ladder/step sections. On busy weekends these become bottlenecks — wet rock plus queueing crowds is a real slip risk. Go on a weekday if possible.
Before you go
  • Decide on a day trek vs. night trek for sunrise — the night option needs a headlamp and warmer layers
  • Expect heavy crowds on weekends/holidays — plan patience into your timing
On the trail
  • Use the iron ladders one at a time — don't rush past others queueing
  • Carry a headlamp even for day treks in case descent runs later than planned
Solo-specific
  • One of the safest solo options given how heavily trafficked it is
  • If night-trekking for sunrise, stick close to other groups on the trail for safety and route-finding
